We hear it all the time, the old phrase that everyone likes to say, that the gurus, the mentors, and the teachers tell us
The Money is In The List
They tell us:
- Without a list you can´t make money
- Without a list you can´t have repeat business
- Having a list is like having your own cash cow
So you got that part and you know it makes sense. Now the next thing we are told is you must have:
- An autoresponder (program for gathering names and emails)
- An ethical bribe (something to give people in exchange for their email address)
Neither of the two points are difficult to implement.
Everyone and their dog will tell you which is their favourite autoresponder, and why it is better than the other one etc. They will tell you this one has better delivery rates, that one has a better template creator etc etc. So this point is now sorted!
The next part is the ethical bribe. If you want me to give my email address I want something back, it´s logical as I am thinking, What´s In It For Me (WIIFM). But again this part is not difficult. All you need to do is to look for some Private Label Rights products that are closely tied to, your website theme and or the product you are trying to sell.
The Right Bribe
Let me explain a bit more. If I have a self help site, and I want to build a list and offer a sign up gift about cooking, people will think this is not very logical.
However if I have a book about goal setting, or self improvement in general, then they will be more willing to give you their email address. Makes sense so far right?
The problem with list building
And now we come to the problem. You can have the best designed website, with a beautiful opt in box that just says sexy, professional and 100% legit, or have the best made landing page that anyone has seen, but if no one visits the page then you are lost. Remember the movie Field of Dreams? The famous line Build it and they will come? Many people still believe this to be true with the Internet.
However the truth is build it and they won´t come, ever, ever, ever! You have to drive the traffic to the offer. And herein lies the problem. I believe this is and has always been the main problem of most internet marketers. Driving traffic. I for one will put up my hand and say “yes Sir, it´s been my problem”, in fact who knows if anyone will see this post?!
How to drive traffic
Again this is a question that could take a long time to answer. There´s many different opinions on this. However I remember when I had my first encounter with John Thornhill, his one piece of advice was to create a product and then drive traffic via JV partners. In essence use other peoples traffic. The idea being, you have a great product, you contact other marketers in your related field, and then give them a % of anything they sell. Of course there is more to it than that but that is essentially it.
The reasoning behind this is sound. A good JV partner can drive good targeted traffic that you only pay for when they make a sale. There´s no issue with Google Slaps, SEO, etc etc.
Of course if you are a no one or a newbie who will JV with you? Good observation. However one form of traffic driving that I have found effective is giveaway events. Basically you join the event, upload your gift, promote the event, along with 100s of others. When a person wants to download your gift they need to sign up to your list.
Think about it, potentially there are 100s of other partners driving traffic to the main site, and from here people may find your gift. Even if you only got 100 sign ups, that´s the start of your list.
I´ve just joined a self improvement giveaway and and rebuilding my list in this niche. In the past I h ave had some great success with these giveaways.
In my next post I want to tell you how to really optimise this source of traffic.
