Domain Name Registration – step 11

Domain Name Registration – Step 11

Inspiration from Dan Lok:
“Work on your business, not in your business.”

Estimated time for completion: ½ hour

When someone types your website name (URL – Uniform Resource Locator) into their web browser, it appears on their screen. To make that happen, there are 2 main functions taking place.
First, their web browser locates the domain name. Second, it directs your website visitor to your hosting account so they can view your website.

1. Domain name – Your domain name is what people enter into their web browser to access your website. For example, the domain name for iClickUniversity is www.iClickUniversity.com

2. Hosting Account – A hosting account is space on a server that holds all the files of your website. It’s where your virtual real estate sits on the world wide web. A server is a website that is connected to the internet 24/7.

In this step, you’re going to register a domain name. Domain names cost about $10 per year for a .com name. I highly recommend a .com name, because it’s an industry standard.

You can choose from several other suffixes like .net, .info, .org and a multitude of others, but we don’t recommend it.

When people search for websites, they automatically enter .com. If your website was iClickUniversity.net, you’ll lose a lot of traffic from people typing in iClickUniversity.com. So register a .com domain.
If it’s possible, get your name as a domain name. If your name is Sam Smith, try and get SamSmith.com. Owning your name as a domain name will help in your future branding. If you can’t get your own name as a .com, use the name of your report or the industry your report addresses. For example, if your report was titled 5 Keys For Goal Setting, you could try registering 5KeysForGoalSetting.com, GoalSetting.com, 5Keys.com or a combination of your title and the industry. The other thing that is important to note is that if your domain name has the keywords of the report in it, it will rank quicker and better in the search engines.

NOTE:
Because websites change their design frequently, the screens you see in the videos may not be exactly the same as the ones you see when you visit the website, but the registration process is the same.
You can register your domain at any domain registrar you wish, but we recommend http://www.NameCheap.com because the customer service is fantastic and the set up is very fast.

To register your domain, follow the steps below:
1. Create a Name Cheap account. It’s free  Type in http://www.namecheap.com into your browser.

2. Click on the “Sign up for a free account” link under the “Login to your account” heading on the right side of the page.

3. Fill in the form

4. Click the “Create account” button

5. Your account has been instantly created and you are logged in to your home page. Enter the domain name that you’d like to register in the field at the top right of the page that says Domain Search: www.

When you enter the domain you’d like to register, do not include the www. For example, if you wanted to register www.iClickUniversity.com, you would enter iclickuniversity in the first field and the default is set to .com

6. If your domain is available, it will appear on the next screen with a checkmark in front of it and you can order it. If the domain you want is already taken, it will appear with an “X” in front of it and you’ll need to choose another domain name.

7. After you successfully order your domain name, logout of your account by clicking on the “Logout” link at the top right hand of the page.

You’ll be revisiting this account in the next step after you’ve set up your hosting account. Remember to watch the video below
