Making money from your site
As I said in my last article I am ethical but that does not mean I don’t want to make money.
So let’s say you are not ready to create a product yet, you need to think about how you are going to monetise your site.
After all you have expenses, you have spent time creating content on your site so you need to make money somehow right?
This post will look at possible ways. However you also want to make sure that you don’t have too many ads or that you lead people away from your site.
This is the revenue platform from Google. You create an account with them, place some code on your website and they will display ads based on your content. I’ll be honest and say it has been years since I used Adsense. Possibly 7 years at this stage. The reason? Google banned me!
Why? Good question. I think at some point I was running ads for affiliate products and they changed their terms and conditions and found my ads and banned me. Now I can not open another account with them. And this is where the problem is with Google. They can decide to ban your account and when you try to talk to them they will not provide you with any information about why they banned you. This they say is due to “operational reasons.”
So to this day I only have a general email from them saying “sorry you’re no longer allowed to use the network” and even after saying I won’t do it again they still will not reinstate my account.
My advice – don’t go near adsense!
When you write a Blog post you can refer to affiliate products and then provide a link to them. Let’s say I write a Blog post on how to protect your Blog from attack. I might then mention that one of the best ways is by using this software. Now since I have provided the reader with great information they may just click on the link and if it is what they are looking for they may buy the product and I will earn a commission.
Once you create our account you can go and search for products that you might want to promote.
A few guidelines:
JVZoo allows you to request permission to promote – many vendors won’t allow you to promote unless you have a profile and have made sales
Clickbank allow you to promote anything so this might be a better move for you. However be careful as Clickbank don’t allow you to cloak your affiliate links
Personally I use this software to allow me to promote products (you’ll see a banner at the top of this page). This software makes everything much easier!
You might not be aware but many websites have a link at the bottom of their pages with the words affiliate or partner. Look out for these as you can then sign up and promote their products (this goes for things like hotels to fitness clubs).
If your site is very popular or becomes very popular you could also consider selling advertising space on it. This would be where you allow a banner to be placed on your site for a period of time. You would charge people to place their banners here.
This can be more complicated as you would need to have a very popular site and then also be able to track impressions and clicks.
For me the best thing you can do is use either of the two affiliate networks mentioned above.
Any questions just let me know
